Keep Safe is a free scheme to help anyone with a learning disability living in the Colchester Borough.

Shops and other venues across the town display the Keep Safe sticker and will offer the use of a telephone or will make a phone call for members of the scheme if they are in need.  For example, if they lose their keys, telephone or wallet, or they are distressed in any way.

Members join the scheme and are given a card that has the phone numbers of their contacts to call for help.  We provide details about the venues supporting the scheme, which include shops, supermarkets and public places that will be a safe destination to go to.

If you or someone you work or care for is interested in joining the scheme, please complete this short application form.

We also welcome applications from venues who would like to provide a safe place for members of the scheme. Please complete this short application form.

“I know from speaking to family members of people with learning disabilities that one of the biggest barriers to reaching independence is the fear of the person becoming lost or being taken advantage of while out.  I believe the scheme is invaluable”.

Alison Ling

Manager, Level Best Art Cafe

“We are proud to support the relaunch of the Keep Safe scheme, which also coincides with Keep Safe Week and Mencap’s Learning Disability Week.  Vulnerable residents can be confident that there are venues they can go to where staff are guaranteed to help them, should they feel unsafe or unwell.”

Pam Donnelly

Chair of the Safer Colchester Partnership

“I’d like to thank the 17 businesses and public venues who have already shown their commitment to supporting some of the most vulnerable members of our community, and invite others to follow their lead and proudly display a Keep Safe sticker in their window”.

Cllr Mike Lilley

Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities and Licensing
